100 years ago, Seppala & Togo: The Unsung Heroes of the 1925 Serum Run

At The Dermatologist’s Dog, we celebrate the extraordinary bond between humans and their canine companions—those moments when loyalty, courage, and love change the course of history. Few stories capture this spirit better than that of Togo, the remarkable Siberian Husky whose heroism during the 1925 serum run to Nome, Alaska, saved countless lives and set the gold standard for what it means to be a true canine hero.

A Rocky Start for a Legendary Dog

Togo’s journey began with anything but promise. As a puppy, he was small, sickly, and endlessly mischievous—a constant challenge for his musher, Leonhard Seppala. Togo’s energy and determination were clear from the start: he once escaped his new home as a house pet by leaping through a window, running miles back to Seppala’s kennel. It was as if Togo knew he was destined for something greater.

When Seppala finally gave Togo a chance in harness, the young dog ran over 75 miles on his very first day—a feat that would have exhausted even the most seasoned sled dogs. Togo’s spirit, intelligence, and stamina quickly earned him the coveted position of lead dog, guiding Seppala’s team to victory in numerous races across Alaska.

The Great Race of Mercy

In 1925, a deadly diphtheria outbreak threatened the remote town of Nome. The only hope was a life-saving antitoxin, which had to be delivered by dog sled relay across nearly 700 miles of frozen wilderness. While Balto would later become the face of the serum run, it was Togo—at 12 years old—who led Seppala’s team through the longest and most perilous stretch: over 260 miles of blizzards, whiteouts, and treacherous ice.

Togo’s leadership and instincts were nothing short of miraculous. He navigated the team across a frozen bay, risking everything as the ice cracked beneath their paws. Through exhaustion and danger, Togo’s unwavering loyalty and courage never faltered.

A Legacy of Loyalty and Endurance

Though Balto received the headlines, those who knew the full story—especially in Alaska—recognized Togo as the true hero of the serum run. After his legendary journey, Togo retired in Maine, living out his days as a beloved companion. His legacy endures, not just in museums or history books, but in the hearts of all who understand the unbreakable bond between a dog and their person.

Togo’s story reminds us that greatness often comes from the most unexpected places. His determination, intelligence, and love for his musher turned a once-troublesome pup into a legend—a testament to the power of believing in our dogs, and the incredible things they can achieve when given the chance.
